CUES - Why?
Formed by Atlantic Records' head of A&R Jesse Stone in 1954, THE CUES were one of the outstanding vocal groups of the 1950s. They recorded prolifically, for Lamp, Jubilee, Groove and Capitol, making the US charts with 'Burn That Candle' and 'Why'. Elsewhere they also sung on dozens of hits of the era, incognito, backing singers like Ruth Brown, Lavern Baker, Big Joe Turner, Nat "King" Cole, Roy Hamilton, Ivory Joe Hunter, Clyde McPhatter, etc. This unique compilation comprises everything that they recorded variously as The Cues, and The 4 Students in the 50s; a one-off 1960 "reunion" 45rpm, credited to Eddie Barnes; and four sides featuring them backing other artists. Freddie Bell & The Bell Boys was the group that brought rock ‘n’ roll to Britain. The group’s recording of ‘Hound Dog’ inspired Elvis Presley to record the song. Included in this package are all of the group’s U.S. and U.K. single releases for Mercury Records, along with earlier American releases on the Teen label. This is the first time these tracks have been compiled on one collection. In addition there are four extra tracks which were recorded later for labels based in New York. The CD comes with an informative booklet, telling Bell’s story and contains, all writer credits, releases information and scans of record labels and other memorabilia. 22 tracks.

Although he would become a big Country star in the 1970s and 80s, singer/songwriter Dickey Lee started out as a heads-down Rock'n'Roller in the 1950s. His first release, 'Stay True Baby', is nowadays a hugely collectable R&R rarity, as are the two 45s he cut for Sun Records in 1957/58, 'Good Lovin' / 'Memories Never Grow Old' and 'Dreamy Nights' / 'Fool, Fool, Fool'. Dickey eventually registered with a controversial death disc, 'Patches', in 1962, which he followed with the hit album, "The Tale Of Patches", the superlative, Dion-inspired, 'I Saw Linda Yesterday', and the popcorn 'Don't Wanna Think About Paula'. This compilation anthologises all his early recordings, between 1957-62, many of which are hard to find on CD. He would subsequently find his way into Country music via songwriting; included herein as a Bonus track is Dickey's first major success as a songwriter, George Jones' effortlessly magnificent 'She Thinks I?Still Care'. 29 tracks.

Also included are a couple of million-selling Dee Dee Sharp 45s on which they sang back-up vocals, 'Mashed Potato Time' and 'Gravy (For My Mashed Potatoes)'. 32 tracks.
A vocal quintet from Philadelphia featuring four guys and a girl, The Majors originally formed in 1959 as The Versatiles, reforming in 1962, as The Majors, with the same line-up. The Impalas were all still in their mid-teens when they cut their first record, 'Sorry (I Ran All The Way Home)', which became one of the biggest hits of 1959. A wildly underrated group, they were unfortunately destined to break up less than two years later, although their trump card - lead singer, Joe "Speedo" Frazier - went on to record as a solo artist during the 60s. This compilation reissues their LP, also titled "Sorry?(I Ran All The Way Home)", plus their subsequent 45s, including their final release, on which they were billed as "Speedo & The Impalas". Also included, for reference purposes only, is a 45 by another, unrelated vocal group named The Impalas, which has provoked considerable debate and erroneously features in their discographies. Their non-album singles are particularly rare, and five of these tracks - including both sides of the "rogue" Impalas' disc - make their CD debuts herein. 19 tracks.

Far better known as a songwriter than singer, ERNIE MARESCA's brief recording career nonetheless yielded the R&R classic, 'Shout! Shout! (Knock Yourself Out)', which guaranteed him a pride of place entry in the pantheon of 'One-Hit Wonders'. This compilation presents Maresca's entire recorded output for the Seville label between 1960-62, including both the mono and stereo mixes of his irresistible hit. Maresca's recordings are notoriously hard to find elsewhere on CD, and this is the first compilation to present a coherent career overview, including some of the hits he wrote for other artists. 32 tracks.
The prolific, versatile Bobby Day enjoyed one of the more convoluted careers in R&B and R&R, singing with countless vocal groups and recording under many pseudonyms. He remains perhaps best known for the original hit version of 'Rockin' Robin', a million-seller for him in 1958 and a song subject to countless covers/revivals over the years. He also charted with 'Little Bitty Pretty One', 'Buzz-Buzz-Buzz', 'Over And Over', 'The Bluebird, The Buzzard And The Oriole', 'That's All I Want', 'Gotta New Girl', 'My Blue Heaven' and 'Gee Whiz'. All are included on this compilation, which traces Bobby's journey from his early 50s Jump Blues and Doo Wop outings to his subsequent solo career, across eight different groups, including The Hollywood Flames and Bob & Earl, and thirteen record labels. 32 tracks.

The Shirelles were probably the most successful girl group of the fifties and sixties. This package contains the A and B sides of all of the singles released by The Shirelles between 1958 and 1962. Liner Notes tell the story of their rise to fame from high school to the top of the Billboard charts. Over seventy minutes of glorious girl group music. 32 tracks.
The Skyliners were a five-piece vocal harmony group from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania that broke the mould as far as the doo-wop sound was concerned. This 26 track collection chronicles The Skyliners singles released on the Calico label, added to which are the songs that appeared on their first LP and subsequent releases on the Colpix, Cameo and Viscount labels. The collection also includes detailed notes tracing The Skyliners' career through the group's best years, 1958 to 1962. 26 tracks.
Jack Scott was famously described by American Rock writer Dave Marsh in The Heart Of Rock & Soul as 'Undeniably, the greatest Canadian Rock 'n' Roll singer of all time'. He was at the peak of his popularity in the late 50s and early 60s, during which he placed more than 20 records on the US charts. This compilation anthologises his Capitol output, comprising all twenty-four sides he recorded for the label, including hits like 'A Little Feeling (Called Love)', 'My Dream Come True' and 'Steps One And Two'. Much of this material is difficult to find elsewhere on CD, notably the six bonus tracks, which were not issued at the time. 24 tracks.
A twenty-eight track compilation of Baby Washington's work from her first recordings to the eve of "That's How Heartaches Are Made". The collection contains her recordings for the Baton, J & S, Neptune, ABC Paramount and Sue labels including the tracks on which she was lead singer for girl-group The Hearts.
